AW@L works in solidarity with First Nations in their struggle against oppression, against colonialism and for sovereignty and the respect that the Canadian government has failed to give them. We also work directly with First Nations activists in Ontario who are fighting to protect the land.
We want all levels of Government in Canada to respect the treaties that have already been signed, and act in good faith towards First Nations who have not ceded their land. We also want all Canadians to recognize inherent Indigenous rights, and act in relation as responsible members of settler communities.
Canada refused to sign on to an United Nations Declaration that commits to human rights for Indigenous people world wide including the right to self-determination. Since first arriving in what is now known as Canada, settlers have been engaged in an active movement to commit genocide on the culture and population of First Nations. Through active war, passive bio-warfare, or the residential school system, many First Nations have been entirely eliminated (eg Beothucks of Newfoundland) and most others reduced to fragments of their pre-contact populations - their cultures being lost to history.
It is time that the Canadian public became aware of the issues surrounding First Nations and to help rectify the shameful behaviours and attitudes we have shown them.
